Frequently asked questions

Do I need a qualified electrician for residential rewiring?

A professional electrician ensures rewiring is safe and meets the standards set in the Wiring Regulations. Unsafe electrics can lead to faults and damage and put people at risk. Insurance companies may not pay your claim if there’s evidence of unsafe electrical installations. If you carry out ‘notifiable’ work on wiring in a property yourself, you will need an Electrical Installation Certificate. Most certification bodies, like the NICEIC, don’t allow second party certification. However, it’s possible to cover notifiable work with an EICR.

How often is residential rewiring needed?

It depends on the age and use of your property. People’s changing requirements, emerging technology and wear and tear can lead to faults and damage. It’s best to ask a professional electrician for advice.

How do I know if a property needs rewiring?

Professional electrical testing will highlight the need for rewiring. Signs that a property needs rewiring include:

  • frequent consumer board ‘trips’
  • switches or sockets overheating
  • flickering or dimming lights
  • damaged or exposed wires.
