Frequently asked questions

Why do I need electrical testing?

Electrical testing confirms the safety and reliability of electrical installations in residential properties. It provides an important check on the condition of circuit breakers, wiring systems, and electrical installations. Identifying potential problems and risks allows you to address them before they cause wider damage or accidents.

Who can carry out electrical inspections and tests?

Inspection and testing are important for the safety of your customers, employees and visitors. That’s why you should only work with qualified and accredited electricians.

What is commercial electrical inspection and testing?

Commercial electrical testing and inspections confirm the safety and efficiency of electrical systems at work. Damaged or faulty wiring and equipment can represent serious risks for your property and people’s safety. An inspection includes visual checks, connection, performance and earthing tests. Issues can include:

  • faulty wiring
  • overheated appliances, sockets and fuse boxes
  • damaged cables
  • power surges.

Regular inspections help identify and address issues before major problems arise. Having an up-to-date inspection report is important if you need to make an insurance claim concerning the electrical installations at your premises.

How often is electrical testing needed for commercial properties?

Regular electrical testing is important to keep your commercial premises safe. Frequency depends on your operations and possible risks. Most commercial properties need a new EICR every five years. If your commercial property is a significant size, you can test 20% of your electrical circuits each year. This provides a full report over the five-year period.

You should carry out inspection and testing after electrical alterations, following incidents such as power surges, equipment failures or fires. If you’re a property owner, you should update your EICR before letting to new tenants.
