CASE STUDY

Solar, Battery & EV Charging near Farnham

26 AIKO panels, SolarEdge battery storage and Zappi EV charging for a busy family home near Farnham, with forecast annual savings of around £2,450.

Residential solar case study

A system built around family life

With someone at home throughout the day, annual electricity use of around 12,000 kWh and bills exceeding £3,500, this family wanted to reduce their reliance on purchased electricity.

They had also recently bought a Volvo EV. Their aim was to generate power for the home, store surplus electricity for the evening and use available solar energy to charge the car.

  • 12.09 kWp array: 26 × AIKO Neostar 2S 465 W all-black panels
  • 16 south-facing and 10 east-facing panels
  • 10 kW SolarEdge Home Hub with S440 optimisers
  • 9.7 kWh SolarEdge battery and Home Backup Interface
  • Myenergi Zappi EV charging
  • Approximately two weeks on site, two-person team

Design and installation

Making the most of a complex slate roof

The property’s hipped slate roof had several slopes, so the array needed to be split across different roof areas. Nearby pine trees also cast shade at different times of day.

We installed 16 panels on the south-facing slope and 10 on the east-facing slope. Each panel was fitted with a SolarEdge S440 optimiser to help manage differences in panel performance and the effects of changing shade.

The all-black panels complement the weatherboarded home and slate roof, while bird mesh helps prevent nesting beneath the arrays.

Big Green Electrical handled the DNO G99 application and completed MCS and NICEIC certification.

Storage and EV charging

Solar, storage and EV charging working together

A 10 kW SolarEdge Home Hub inverter manages the installation, supported by a 9.7 kWh SolarEdge battery that stores electricity for later use.

The Home Backup Interface provides backup capability for selected essential circuits during a power cut. A Myenergi Zappi charger uses available surplus solar generation to charge the Volvo.

Predicted savings and real-time monitoring

The original proposal used the customer’s electricity bills and modelled system performance to forecast the following:

  • Annual solar generation: 10,665 kWh
  • Solar contribution with storage: 58% of household electricity use
  • Average monthly electricity bill: projected reduction from £293 to £89
  • Annual saving: approximately £2,450
  • Simple payback: around 10 years

These are forecasts, rather than measured post-installation savings. Actual results depend on weather, tariffs, consumption and battery and EV charging behaviour.

The SolarEdge app shows how electricity is being generated and used. In the supplied screenshot, solar production was 2.02 kW, with 1.68 kW supplying the home and 0.34 kW charging the battery. This is a snapshot, rather than evidence of annual savings.
