Consumer Unit Upgrade in Weybridge

After buying their Weybridge home, the owners commissioned an EICR. We upgraded the house and garage consumer units with individual RCBOs and surge protection, and installed a myenergi zappi EV charger.

Electrical reassurance for new homeowners

Buying a home is an exciting milestone, but it can also uncover work that needs attention. For the new owners of this Weybridge property, checking the condition of the electrics was an important early step.

Big Green Electrical carried out a full Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). Our inspection identified that circuits in both the main house and garage lacked RCD protection. We recommended replacing both consumer units to improve circuit protection and provide capacity for future additions.

  • Main house and garage consumer unit replacements.
  • Individual RCBO protection and Type 2 surge protection in both boards.
  • Spare capacity for future circuits.
  • myenergi zappi EV charger installation.
  • Main house power restored the same working day.

The main house

Individual protection for every circuit

In the main house, we installed a larger FuseBox consumer unit with individual RCBOs and Type 2 surge protection.

RCBOs provide earth-leakage, overload and short-circuit protection for each circuit. Having individual devices also helps contain a circuit fault, reducing the likelihood of losing power across several unrelated circuits.

Type 2 surge protection helps protect electrical equipment against transient overvoltages. We also selected a board with spare ways, giving the homeowners room to add circuits as their needs change.

Garage electrics

Garage upgrade and myenergi zappi charger

The garage received a smaller consumer unit with the same approach: individual RCBO protection, Type 2 surge protection and space for future additions.

Alongside the upgrade, we installed a myenergi zappi EV charger, giving the homeowners the convenience of charging their vehicle at home.

Power restored before the evening

One of the main challenges was completing the main house changeover within one working day so the homeowners could use their electricity that evening.

This involved removing the existing consumer unit, fitting the replacement, reconnecting the existing circuits through their new RCBOs, and completing the testing needed before restoring power. Careful planning allowed us to complete the main house changeover and re-energise the circuits that day.

Reassurance for the new owners

The homeowners' main concern was the lack of RCD protection identified during the inspection. The replacement boards addressed that concern, providing individual circuit protection alongside surge protection and useful spare capacity.

For the new owners, the result was greater confidence in their electrical installation as they settled into their home.
